Sermon: Harry Potter

Rev. David Robins

Harry Potter has a faith that right makes might, and the stories of his life tell us many important things:

  • How to be true to yourself
  • How to discover your own gifts and talents
  • How to use power wisely
  • How to resist injustice
  • How to use your imagination and creativity

Harry Potter is an orphan who lives with his aunt and uncle. One day a mysterious letter arrives by owl messenger, a letter with an invitation to a wonderful school for witches and wizards, named Hogwarts.

Diagon Alley is the place where young wizards in the Harry Potter books go to buy supplies for their school year, just as our children peruse the aisles of the retail stores for their school supplies and clothes. The wizard kids buy capes and magic wands, cauldrons and owls. Harry Potter begins his Diagon Alley adventure with a list of needed school supplies. Since this is the first Sunday of the church year, I have a list of suggested church supplies:

  • Look for the groups and the books that you will need for your own transformation, for your own enlightenment, comfort, inspiration.
  • Find a place for your soul to put down roots and for your spirit to take flight.
  • Look for a sorting hat that will help you to sort out your own beliefs.
  • Find ways to express your unique compassion, and a persistent stretching toward what is fair.
  • Find the magic of apology and forgiveness.
  • Make 6 new friends in the upcoming year like Harry Potter did, so that you know each other
