Social Justice
The Social Justice Committee intends to foster, encourage, support, and initiate actions which support justice in our communities and the larger world. Those justice efforts encompass human rights, environmental protection, and economic justice, among others. We coordinate our activities through monthly meetings and periodic action alerts to members. The Committee is responsible for scheduling speakers for the Social Justice Candle at the weekly worship service which is intended to inform the PUUC community of relevant events and actions. The committee organizes periodic letter-writing sessions at the social hour after the worship service to help congregational members to weigh in on current public issues. The committee also organizes and sponsors a variety of public lectures, movies and discussions designed to increase community awareness and depth of knowledge about key issues. In the past year the committee has:
* Sponsored a reading group on William McKibben's "Deep Ecology" in advance of Mr. McKibben's appearance at the Lyceum.
* Cosponsored the film FLOW, which discusses world-wide water use and misuse.
* Worked cooperatively with the Green Sanctuary Committee to integrate Environmental Justice issues into the weekly Social Justice Candle.
* Presented a talk by Deborah Williams, a noted Alaskan biologist, on the impact and implications of recent environmental change
The Social Justice Committee meets monthly at 12:00 Noon on the second Sunday of each month on the stage in the Parish Hall. Minutes of all meetings are posted here. Join us!
